FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 26, 2026

Today, JCRC and the Bay Area Jewish community join millions across the country in denouncing the outrageous shootings of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We mourn these horrific deaths, stand with the families and communities calling for justice, and condemn the excessive use of force by federal agents. These were private citizens exercising their right to free speech and there must be full investigations.

Over the past year, we have witnessed with growing alarm as Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) has been expanded and transformed into an agency that too often operates with impunity. ICE’s methods include dehumanizing rhetoric, racial bias, militarized enforcement, and the detention of individuals regardless of immigration status, as well as the use of extrajudicial prison camps, third-country removals, and brutal violence against detainees and protestors. These methods, which undermine both public safety and public trust, violate our constitution by denying due process and equal protection under the law.

Our Jewish values call on us to welcome the stranger and to honor the dignity and sanctity of every human life. The images and stories coming from protesters, immigrant families, and innocent bystanders echo our own historical experiences – fleeing oppression, crossing borders as refugees, and rebuilding lives torn apart by state-sponsored violence and war.
